Our review of 8th Nov Peepshow.

Well it's been over a week now since the first Peepshow took place, so please accept our apologies for not updating this sooner, but it really has taken us this long to recover! Those people who managed to squeeze into the Backroom of the Bullingdon witnessed something a bit special; Oxford has never known a party quite like it. Apologies to anyone who couldn't get in, we really were blown away by the turnout, and would like to thank everyone who came along and helped make it such a special evening.

From as soon as the doors opened, the Backroom was heaving, capacity was reached by pub closing time and it remained one-in, one out pretty much until things finally wrapped up at two am. And boy did it go off! The Backroom was almost unrecognisable after being transformed by the Peepshow decorations, with hanging eyes, bubbles, and badges galore, and two extra giant screens brought in especially for the night to show our VJs' live projections, which were breath taking all night.

The atmosphere was amazing, made by an incredibly friendly, welcoming and up for it crowd, with Oxford locals joined by people who had travelled from all over the South and Midlands just to be there. The music was of the highest quality over the course of the night, the bands all awesome, and the DJs had the dancefloor rocking until closing time.

alanM warmed things up perfectly before and between our live acts, displaying his cultured taste with a cosmopolitan blend of the best in deep and soulful electronica from around the world.

Our first live act, local boys Laroca then set the tone of the evening in grand fashion with their inimitable sound, fusing wonderful lush down tempo grooves with classical instruments making electronic music sound anything but. This was the first outing for their new improved line-up, having added a cello, percussion, and additional keys to their bass, flute and sequencer, and for the first time having live dedicated visuals too, by Myogenic. Tight, with great songs played expertly well, it would seem hard to improve on an already polished act but the addition of visuals made this a performance to remember - the live synching of cinefilm footage of band members rehearsing on the screens with what was being played onstage left many people breath-taken. Hexstatic eat your heart out!

They were followed by Peepshow's own Dutch master, Omeron. A two piece now when playing live, and added to here by a backdrop of stunning visuals from Amukidi, they immediately picked up the tempo of the night, getting people moving before taking us on a journey through some of the most beautifully crafted ambient electronica and deep house you are ever likely to hear. The reaction of the crowd to this music was all that needed to be said about this performance, and it was a touching to see Ron so genuinely taken aback by the volume of applause after each tune.

Bussetti then took to the stage, and man how they rocked the place, nearly taking the roof off the Bully with funky ass tune following another after another. As tight as you like, they provided us with an assured performance bursting with energy, top notch tunes throughout, incredible vocals, and by oozing such charismatic cool onstage, it was clear to see that this seven piece jazz funk hip-hop band are clearly going places and fast. With their own VJ bgpz providing lovely visual stimuli, they were the perfect headliners for the first Peepshow and we'd like to thank them personally for putting on such a good show. Look out for their debut single 'Softly' which comes with remixes by artists as well regarded as Boomclick and Four Tet.

And so it was the duty of your host, Peepshow Paddy to finish off the evening's proceedings with a DJ set. As seemed appropriate for the night, he clearly enjoyed himself, and played an eclectic selection of tunes taking in breaks, beats, disco, and house to name but a few, but never straying too far from the funk! The dancefloor was loving it and nobody could bring themselves to leave until the lights came on! And then they were still shouting for more!

So, all this, especially commissioned live visual projections from top class VJs, a variety of consistently high quality dance music from awesome live acts and DJs, great people and a great atmosphere, make Peepshow truly a breath of fresh air, and surely the best audio-visual club night that Oxford has to offer. And about bloody time too!
