Our review of 28th Feb Peepshow.
It seems that word about Peepshow has spread quickly, having been featured club on the BBC Oxford website, and billed as the best club in the country in the Guardian Guide on only its second night. People travelled from all over the country and as far away as Inverness, Cork and Amsterdam to get a slice of Peepshow action, and a sold out Bullingdon was the scene once again for more audio-visual treats and beats.
The venue filled quickly after the doors opened, with a buzz of anticipation amongst the friendly, up for it crowd helping to create another great atmosphere. The Peepshow decorations and visual show once again transformed the Bully, and the musical line up was so good that this time out there had to be two headline acts.
Our first guest VJ of the evening, Birmingham’s Leolo provided the backdrop whilst resident DJ alanM welcomed the crowd with a wicked blend of new electronica and deep techno. Much of his set showed off some of the cracking material currently coming out of his native Glasgow, before our guest DJ Nettie warmed things up as she only can. Her gorgeous set took in a wide ranging selection of tunes and was described by one crazy punter as being “a journey of love.” Couldn’t have put it better myself!
There were high expectations for our first live act of the evening, and he did not disappoint in the slightest. Coming to us all the way from Berlin, Ulrich Schnauss demonstrated just what a master of his art he is, creating an incredible wall of sound that nearly blew the roof off the Bully. With beautiful songs full of inspiring, rousing melodies and epic soundscapes, and complemented by dazzling visuals by Myogenic, Schnauss’ set was a sonic assault on the senses that left you breathlessly wanting more. A real treat for all who saw him on his first visit to Oxford, we look forward to him returning one day to Peepshow.
Our second live act then picked up the tempo of the evening with an energy packed performance that kick-started the party. Boomclick, a six-piece when playing live from south London, whose music is a consequence of spending as much time in the mosh-pit as much as on the dancefloor, kept the Peepshow crowd entertained in grand fashion with their unique sound. Raw, dirty, dubbed up beats, top quality tunes, and with a dedicated visual show by We Make Telly, the ‘boxcar beatniks’ showed us why this should be their year, no more so than with their belting current single, ‘Follow Love’ out now on Sunday Best recordings.
Resident DJ Peepshow Paddy again wrapped things up in his own particular style, rocking the floor with another eclectic mix of funky tunes from across the board, taking in samba, house, electro, drum n bass, and even Rod Stewart amongst other things along the way.
So, another great night all round then, at what is surely Oxford’s best new club night. And if you’ve missed out so far, then it’s not too long to wait now until the next one, which takes place again in the Bullingdon on April 24th, when we turn up the funk with Mr Güder and The Second Whorl taking to the Peepshow stage. A DJ set from Mr Güder’s own Dr Rubberfunk, along with sets by the Peepshow residents complete the musical line-up. Visual stimuli will be provided as ever by resident Myogenic, along with very special guest VJs Amukidi and the Ombudsman.
