Captive State

Back to guest biographies // Back to artists // Homepage

Captive State is a 9-piece band fusing hip-hop with just about every musical style; the result is a heady worldly mix of beats, horns, harmony and lyrics that make you actually think. The group has had a busy 2004, with the completion of their first EP – highly acclaimed by legendary producer and musician Brian Eno – a series of live dates at clubs and nights in London and beyond, and festival appearances through the summer. From their week-long run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to a recent headline appearance at Cargo, London, Captive State are bringing their unique sound to audiences across the country.

The project began 18 months ago in Brixton, London, as co-writers Tom Bootle and Joseph Kennedy looked to take some of their studio tracks into a live setting. And from the moment that Captive State was born unto the world at Truck Festival 2003, the live experience has been key for this band, blending the distinct characters and styles of nine individual musicians into a mind-blowing whole. Musical influences? Many and eclectic are probably the best words. Hip-hop and jazz are there in abundance, but then there are the classical chorale horns, paranoid beats and Klezmer harmonies. Chuck in a pinch of ska, of world, and of dub and you’re close. No-one seems to have quite worked it out in words yet. Recently Captive State have been back in the studio recording new tracks and working on new material, but followers have gigs in London, Oxford, Southampton to look forward to in the near future. Check out the website at www.captivestate.net for upcoming dates and samples of the latest tracks.

"It is very impressive and I congratulate you. I am never sure what to do with the (very few) things I receive which i actually like, other than to wish its purveyor the best of luck... and to hope that I might bump into someone who happens to be looking for someone like you." [Brian Eno, on the EP]

"A different sort of genius" [Paul Bonham, Truck Records]
