Digitonal

If the thought of melodic electronica fails to set your pulses racing
then Digitonal are here to make you think again. Whilst their studio
based work for labels such as Toytronic (2002's 23 Things Fall Apart
LP) and Seed (2004's Centre Cannot Hold EP) has rightly been considered as
some of the finest and most unashamedly beautiful electronica released
in recent years it is as a live unit that they have made the most
impact. Performances at The Big Chill, dedbeat, London’s National
Theatre and ICA, as well as regular appearances at The Spitz,
Elektrowerkz and clubs and venues both here and abroad, have cemented
the band’s reputation for the unexpected.
With a background in classical music, roots stretching from Nottingham
to Alexandria to Darlington and their willingness to move in circles
outside the IDM template, Digitonal are as far as you can get from the
stereotype of the faceless electronica act – producer Andrew Dobson
creates living, breathing melodies and emotion laden hooks, whilst
Violinist Samy Bishai and drummer Callum Macmillan lift their
performance above their peers, introducing a crucial human element into
the music, and improvising and reworking their own pieces as they
perform. Currently collaborating with acclaimed singer/songwriter
Kirsty Hawkshaw (Opus 3/Orbital), whose ethereal vocals compliment Digitonal's
atmospheric soundscapes so perfectly, there are few more exciting acts
working within the electronica field today.
