Mavis
Back to guest biographies // Back to artists // Homepage

One of the first women VJs in the UK, Rachel Stringer has been creating visuals and VJing as 'mavis' for the last six years. Looking to step away from the standard VJ output of disassociated, confused images and animations, mavis’ visuals bring back the basics of beauty, form, colour, and humour, whilst still looking forward in style and content. Themed sets are made using video footage, found footage and motion graphics, and are developed by working with musicians, actors and dancers, taking inspiration from the immediate environment and surroundings, as well as a rich film & tv visual heritage.
Originally holding a 3 year residency with Raya at London’s ICA, mavis has VJed with artists including Asian Dub Foundation, Adam Freeland, Armitage Shanks Sound System, Pharcyde & Daddy Kane, and at nightclubs including Lakota, 333, The Scala, Ocean and 291 Arts Club. She has VJed at festivals including the Big Chill, Bestival, Dedbeat, and Out There Festival, created video installations for Greenbelt Festival, and is a resident at Soxan and Daft Pink.
In 2002 mavis co-founded We Make Telly (WMT), a group of VJs, animators, graphic designers and film makers who create professional content for bands, nightclubs, pop videos, corporate launches, and visual installations as well as VJing live. Mavis has created custom-made visuals for artists including Badly Drawn Boy, Chi2 (violinists for Moby, Lamb, KLF & The Orb), Asian fusion band Shivanova, and Boomclick (Sunday Best).
Mavis is currently collaborating with Burt Latino, and has created a set of funny, energetic, beautiful, cheeky visuals for his new album and live show. Regular performers at the Big Chill bar, they take all the energy and fun they showed at this year’s Big Chill and the Bestival, and cram it into a booty shaking 5 hours and four walls.
